Costume mounting

Costume mounting is an essential part of getting costumes ready for exhibition. Proper mounting not only displays costumes at their best, it also supports the garments, which is important for objects which are fragile.

For this dress from the 1960s, a standard mannequin formed the base of the mount. Layers of fibrefill were then sewn onto the mannequin to pad certain areas in order to fill out the shape of the dress, giving the mannequin a figure more similar to its wearer. To support the shape of the skirt, a skirt made of tulle was added, covered with a soft cotton jersey fabric. A jersey covering for the torso of the dress was made, which smoothed the overall shape and protected the inside of the dress.
