About

Charlotte Fenton, textiles conservator

My name is Charlotte Fenton - or Char for short - a textiles conservator in Amsterdam. My interest in textiles began at a young age, when I would sew toys for myself and dream up fashion designs.

After volunteering in museums and historic houses, I decided that I wanted to work hands-on with historical objects. I came to Amsterdam to study Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, specialising in textiles, at the University of Amsterdam. During the course, I learned both the theory and practice of conservation, and came to understand textiles from a physical, chemical and historical perspective.

I did internships at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels, where my main project was a silk parasol, and the Kunstmuseum in Den Haag, where I conserved a dress by the House of Worth.

I have experience treating objects including costumes, accessories, tapestries, banners and archaeological textiles, encompassing a wide range of fabric types and time periods.
