Archaeological textiles

These textiles were excavated from under a church in North Holland. At the beginning, the textiles were crumpled together in a tight ball. Archaeological textiles are very difficult to treat due to the extent of the damage and their fragility. The treatment therefore focused on separating the distinct pieces and removing creases and deformation as far as possible, using humidification treatment. As the shapes of the pieces emerged, it became clear that some of them were part of a priest’s stole.
